There is more than just the commonly known way of growing plants. Most farmers usually use the soil to cultivate their plants. In water plants, one of the most commonly used methods is the hydroponics system. In such cases, there is usually no need of soil since the plants are grown in water and natured using nutrients technically dissolved in water.

These mechanisms can either be passive or active. For the latter, the dissolved nutrient solution is actively passed over the plants roots. These types of plants usually need a medium for planting which should be as large as the vermiculite or the pea gravel. For the passive or inactive system, the nutrients are fed into the plants through the wick or capillary system.

This is used to suck in the nutrient solution coming from the reservoir and take it up to the root system through the plants medium. Each of these two options have there own requirements and options.
